Definition

A nabothian cyst is a cystic lesion at the transformation zone between the squamous epithelium of the ectocervix and the columnar epithelium of the endocervical canal.

A nabothian cyst is caused by growth of the squamous epithelium over the columnar epithelium.

The result is trapping of cervical mucus produced in the crypts of the columnar epithelium. The structural change is characterized by a cystic space filled with mucus and covered by squamous epithelium at the cervical transformation zone.

The functional change is usually minimal.

Clinically most women with a nabothian cyst are asymptomatic and present during routine gynecologic examination.

Diagnosis is made based on clinical appearance.

No treatment is required, as nabothian cysts are benign. Many regress without intervention.

Fibroid Impingement on the Endometrium

In this sagittal view of a T2 weighted MRI of the uterus of a 42 year old female with multiple fibroids two of which impinge on the endometrial cavity (the larger (light green) from posterior and the smaller (dark green) from anterior resulting in a sigmoid shaped cavity (yellow). In addition incidentally noted Nabothian cysts (orange) are seen within the cervix.

Sagittal View of the Cervix

The ultrasound is from a 40 year old patient who presents with pelvic discomfort . Nabothian cysts in the cervix are of incidental note. They are cystic in nature demonstaring anechogenicity, through transmission, and backwall enhancement. The examination was otherwise normal.
